One of the first things you should consider is what attributes of your import car do you want to enhance. Sit down with pen and pad in hand and outline realistic goals, keeping in mind that you will not be able to modify everything to the gills. You will have to decide which attributes will have to be simply passable.

The second thing you should do is set a realistic budget. Write down how much money you have coming in and subtract your expenses. Decide what percentage of the money you have left will be used for modifying you car.

Third, decide a realistic time line for you import modifications. Take into consideration the time it takes to find the parts as well as the time it takes to deliver them.

Also, consider possible delays such as unexpected expenses, aftermarket parts out of stock, the time it takes to get your ‘work team’ together, delivery delays due to holidays and weather conditions. Remember to thoroughly research any company you are buying from. It is far too easy for a fly-by-night company to take you money and fold.

Fourth, seriously think about this: How much do you rely on this car on a daily basis? Is it your only source of transportation to work, school, buying groceries, etc?

Do you have a reliable second source of transportation you could use on a daily basis whether it is a friend, your family, the bus, a taxi, etc?

Fifth, you should have 24 / 7 access to the internet in order to use message boards and reputable chat rooms in order to get help! A cellular phone would also be handy in case you get stranded!
