Sport Compacts and Racing Seats
Racing seats (aftermarket competition seats) are not as adjustable as stock seats (or factory seats). They can weigh about 12 to 16 lbs a pair and are stronger than factory seats.
Two types of racing seats are:
1. Rigid-shell seats made of such materials as fiberglass, aluminum, carbon fiber, carbon / Kevlar.
2. Tubular steel framing seats which is similar to how factory seats are made.
Non-adjusting rigid-type seats are lighter and stronger than adjustable rigid-type seats. Rigid-shell type seats are also compatible with five-point harnesses. They allow you to ‘feel your ride’ more directly, therefore, enhancing your driver performance.
Rigid-shell type seats can cost you anywhere from $200.00 to $1500.00 each. When shopping for a competition seat, make sure it fits your shoulder, hips, and waist comfortably. Also, make sure your new seats have a mounting area which allows you to use your factory seat belt! Installation of your racing seats usually takes 2 – 3 hours and uses your factory mounting holes.
