I’m Catching Hell, Part II
… enter Kraft mayonnaise on the scene. I worked a small amount through my hair without washing it first. I then sprayed it with water and put on a conditioning cap.
You know that mayonnaise contains a lot of fat when talking about your health, but you may not realize that it is actually very oily to the touch.
Basically, ‘Just a dab will you ya.’
It made my hair feel so soft and I’m loving the experience. I can touch it with less guilt now.
If you apply it in ‘quarter size’ increments, there will be less of a chance for you to overdo it. Yes, I know the quarter size recommendation is usually useless for most hair conditioners. Especially for us Nappies!
The cool thing about mayo is that even after you rinse it out, some will stay on your hair for days. Just do not use too much or you will be accused of dripping Jheri Curl juice all over Aunt Frieda’s plastic-covered couch.
I let it sit at least 30 minutes, then rinsed it out with warm water. I used a wide tooth comb to detangle it and then put it in simple two strand twists and finally went to bed.
When I got up it was mostly dry. I untwisted it and put it into one cool afro puff on the top of my head.
So what have I learned? And no, this is not the first time I’ve done unwise things to my hair.
I am reminded that my hair is not tough, it is delicate. It is not designed to shun moisture, it is designed to lap it up! One thing you MUST realize about your daughter’s nappy hair, whether Black or Biracial, is that it loves water. Yes, w-a-t-e-r. For so long we have kept our little girls out of the rain and only washed their hair maybe once every two weeks. That is only 2 times a month!
Just so you know, one of the keys to growing your child’s hair is to keep it clean.
Can nappy hair be WASHED every day? Yes.
Should it be SHAMPOOED every day? It depends.
Like with Caucasian hair, it simply depends on whether her hair falls in the oily range or dry range.
You have to simply listen to her hair. I can not stress that enough.
