In Defense of the N-Word, Part III

What you must understand, especially for your daughter’s sake, is that naps are nothing to be ashamed of. My children are Biracial. My daughter is 1 year old. She has big Caucasian-like curls. Do you know there are people close to us who are holding their breath, praying that her hair does not ‘turn nappy?’

Nappy is a term that the population in general is familiar with, although perceptions of what it means will come in different flavors.

I am raising my daughter to be proud of EVERYTHING that she is, from her intelligent brain to her kind heart to her ample hips to her gorgeous toes.

There will come a time when my Baby Girl along with YOUR baby girls will look at the world and truly say in the words of India.Arie:

“I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am the soul that lives within.”
