Difference between Hair Conditioners

Protein conditioners (volumizing conditioner and re-constructor conditioners) do not actually repair or re-construct the hair shaft. They coat the hair shaft with protein and fill the gaps in the outer cuticle, thus giving the appearance of shinier, healthier hair. These types of conditions are usually used once a month, NOT daily. Using
protein conditioner too often and for longer than the directions recommend can make your hair brittle. Following up with a moisturizing conditioner is a good idea. Example of a protein conditioner: Suave Natural Care Vanilla Almond & Silk Protein Conditioner.

Moisturizing conditioners (or deep conditioners) contain humectants which are compounds that draw moisture from the air into the hair. Example of a moisturizing conditioner: Pantene Pro-V Hydrating Curls. Leave-in conditioners are not as thick as regular hair conditioners. They are made to stay on the hair until the next wash day. They provide added sheen, moisture, and protection. Example of a leave-in conditioner: Infusium 23 Leave-In Treatment.

Reconstructor conditioners contains hydrolyzed protein which penetrates and strengthen the hair shaft. It is usually applied for a short duration (under 5 minutes). Example of a reconstructor: Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Reconstructor.

Detanglers are conditioners that coat the hair and provide ‘slip’, thus allowing your fingers and comb to slide through for styling. A detangler is usually applied after washing and conditioning. Example of a detangler: Biolage Detangling Solution.

Thermal protectors contain polymers which absorbs much of the heat from blowdryers, hot curler, straightening combs (pressing combs), etc. Example of a themal protector: Thermasilk Intensive Conditioning Thermal Wrap.

Acidifiers keeps the conditioner’s pH balance at approximately 2.5 – 3.5. This acidity causes the shingles or ‘scales’ of the outer cuticle to close, thus, keeping the hair from ‘catching’ on each other. Example of an acidifier (clarifier): Thermasilk Clarifying Conditioner or regular old Apple Cider Vinegar – ACV.
