Good Hair Bad Hair

This is a general overview of the good hair, bad hair myth. Undoubtedly, you have heard the terms good hair and bad hair when reference to a Black or Biracial person’s hair type. Good and Bad are polar opposites.

These are just a few definitions of the word Good: Being positive or desirable in nature. Not spoiled or ruined. Superior to the average. Of high quality. Worthy of respect. Attractive. Complete. Able to elicit a specified reaction. Pleasant. Of moral excellence. Well-behaved. Socially correct.

These are just a few definitions of the word Bad: Evil. Not achieving an adequate standard. Sinful. Vulgar. Obscene. Disobedient. Disagreeable. Unpleasant. Disturbing. Unfavorable. Spoiled. Detrimental. Not working properly. Defective. Full of faults. Severe.

Despite these stark differences of perception, people continue to encourage this way of thinking. Yes, this way of thinking is rooted in the era of slavery in America. Yes, racism is alive and well today. Yes, racism is alive and well today within cultures of African descent. However…

If you believe as jazz singer Ethel Waters puts it, “I know I’m somebody cause God don’t make no junk!”  you will NOT buy into these myths.

Stop this way of thinking in its tracks. Every child of every race will thank you for it…
