Nappy Hairstyles: Creating Afros

This is a step by step guide to the Afro style for nappy, napptural, or natural hair of African descent at home. All great hair styles begin with clean, healthy hair. You can create an Afro using several methods. Two methods to use on damp hair are blow dry or air dry. You will get bedhead when you sleep, but if you sleep with a satin cap or on a satin pillowcase, it only takes a few minutes in the morning to touch up your Afro.

Blow-dried Afro

1. Use comb to part your DAMP hair into small squares.
2. Detangle each section.
3. Set blow dryer on COOL until waves are minimized to your liking. Gently comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb.
4. Use a pick or your fingers to style.

Air-dried Afro

1. Use comb to part your DAMP hair into small squares.
2. Detangle each section.
3. Let air dry.
4. Use a pick or your fingers to style.

Afro Styling Tips: If you choose the Blow-dried Afro method or ANY hair style, heat should ALWAYS be keep to a minimum. Afros are very versatile and can be styled anywhere from very nappy to straighter. Afros are very low maintenance. As with all hairstyles, make sure your hair is properly moisturized.
