Nappy Hairstyles: Nappy Flat Twists
This is a step by step guide to the Flat Twists style for nappy, napptural, or natural hair of African descent at home. All great hair styles begin with clean, healthy hair. You can Flat Twist nappy hair that is damp or dry. It all depends on if you prefer to detangle your hair while it is wet or dry. Choose a time when you are relaxed. Be patient and Flat Twist in a slow, steady rhythm. Flat Twist styles may last longer if you use a little gel or sleep with a simple stocking type cap over your hair. A Flat Twist style may last up to several days, depending on how rough you sleep and whether or not you cover your hair at night.
How to Create Flat Twists
- 1. Use a comb to separate your hair into a long row (we will call this Row 1) from forehead to the middle of your head. You can go all the way to the nape of the neck if you like.
- 2. Start as close to the forehead as you can. Get a small section of Row 1 and divide it into two. Twist these two portions.
- 3. Flat Twisting is a lot like regular cornrowing. You constantly add hair to EACH of the two portions from Row 1 as your work your way down the row.
- 4. Continue until you get to the end of the Flat Twist.
- 5. Secure the end with a cloth covered elastic.
- 6. Go back and repeat Step 1 through Step 5.
Flat Twisting Tips: To make a tighter Flat Twist, pull horizontally as you twist. To make a looser Flat Twist, pull vertically as you twist. Do not use UNcovered rubber bands. Do not make the Flat Twist too tight. Flat Twists do NOT make the hair grow. Flat Twist should NOT be painful. Flat Twists that are too tight can lead to traction alopecia or hair loss.
