Sport Compacts and Racing Harnesses
Racing harnesses (aftermarket competition harnesses) are both active safety and passive safety devices because they help you handle your ride better and increase your chances of surviving a crash, respectively. The straps of a racing harness generally comes in four designs:
1. Three-point racing harness: These racing harnesses are also called Y design racing harnesses and are often avoided because they put a lot of force on a single mounting point and will let you to slide forward and under it (submarining) during a crash! That is definitely not what you want.
2. Four-point racing harness: These racing harnesses are also often avoided because will let you slide forward and under it (submarining) during a crash! Not good.
3. Five-point racing harness: These racing harnesses have a fifth strap that connects to the floor, keeping the lap belt on your hips, therefore, keeping you from sliding forward and under it during an accident.
4. Six-point racing harness: These racing harnesses do not pass between your legs, but has additional straps that run from your hips to the floor to keep the lap belt on your hips.
Be aware that harnesses have expiration dates!
