Trimming Nappy Hair

This is a step by step guide to trimming nappy, napptural, or natural hair of African descent at home. It’s unavoidable. At some point you are going to have to trim the ends of your nappy hair. You can have it done at a salon or you can do it at home. No matter how well you take care of your hair, split ends can occur. Split ends can be the result of a number of things:

  • Relaxers
  • Applying too much heat to the hair too often
  • Hair pins without the protective plastic on the tips
  • Bows and combs that have a sharp seam down the teeth
  • Chlorine
  • The friction from collars and caps
  • Moisturizing too seldom
  • Washing the hair too seldom
  • Living in a dry climate

Below are two ways to trim your nappy hair yourself at home.

Method 1:

Wash and condition your hair. Create several small or medium 2-strand twists with all of your hair. Let it dry naturally. After it dries completely, snip the ends off each 2-strand twist.

Method 2:

Wash and condition your hair. Blow dry or let it dry naturally. Straighten with a flat iron or a straightening (pressing) comb. Part your hair into several small sections. If you are right-handed hold each section between the index and middle fingers of your left hand (palm facing you). Slide them from the root to about an inch above where the split ends start and snip.

Nappy Hair Trimming Tips: Choose a time when you are calm and relaxed. You can pop in a good movie while you are creating your 2-strand twists. You can substitute braids for 2-strands twists. Get a pair of good scissors (professional grade) that are designed for cutting hair.
